内容提要： Challenges to the "social contract" in market-oriented states posed by the rising inequality；comparisons among the United States, Russia, and China with respect to trends in interpersonal and interregional income inequality and the policy trade-offs that we face between "widening" and "deepening" social protection through redistributive spending and social insurance.
