市场营销系讲座:Title:Capability stretching: Empirical evidence from the computer workstation industry

Abstract: Innovation links the past to the present and the present to the future. In the process of innovation, organizations leverage their capabilities accumulated through past histories and stretch their capabilities to compete for the future. By exploiting a firm’s preexisting technological know-how, new products developed by the firm can achieve superior performance in the market. By stretching a firm’s technological know-how to a higher level, the firm may encounter difficulties in learning unfamiliar, new knowledge elements. Based on an empirical study of new product introduction in the workstation industry between 1980 and 1996, we find that capability stretching is generally detrimental to capability learning and to the survival of new products. However, we also find that organizational boundaries affect capability stretching. In particular, vertical integration increases the difficulties of capability stretching, thus exacerbating the negative relationship between capability stretching and new product survival. We also find that the market scope mitigates the difficulties of capability stretching, thus mitigating the negative relationship between capability stretching and new product performance. We contribute to the innovation literature and the organizational capabilities literature by calling attention to the difference between capability stock and capability change and to the impact of organizational boundaries on capability learning.
